It was the sweltering summer of 2008, my bags were packed, and I farewelled my beloved parents and home sweet home in NSW. I headed south across the border to Melbourne, it was like cracking open a new batch of tennis balls, hearing the pressure burst from the can and smelling the freshness of a new start!
Day 1 of the O-week Open Classic sky-rocketed through like a 220km/hour serve slogged by the talented A-Rod. I was excited, nervous, slightly crazy and ready to take on the next round of my life. Crowds and more crowds of people flooded the arena of Melbourne Uni ready to witness history in the making. The umpire flipped the coin and I won the serve, the ball was in my court and I began attacking the net, the lone solider I was battling my way through each point, I tried to make as many friends as a could. Unfortunately being the country bumpkin that I am and having a pretty dodgey serve it wasn't an easy match...I was 2 sets down and in the third getting flogged 5-2...but there was still a slither of hope flickering in the distance.
Day 2 of the O-week open classic began with clear sunny skies, the birds were chirping, the bees buzzing and I had my game face on! Sport clubs and societies swarmed around me like crazy fans begging and pleading madly for my autograph, I was fading by the minute...I needed a boost of energy...I needed some delicious Gatorade...Suddenly everything went black, then a shimmering light shone down on a single club's stall, there was something in the air that night, the stars shone bright, Fernando Vedasco was topless and I knew I had found my place in the world. The Melbourne University tennis club greeted me with warm hearted smiles, an awesome FREE t-shirt and lots of love, 15 love, 30 love and sometimes if you were lucky even 40 love. At last I wasn't alone anymore. It was like making it to the Australian open finals, it hadn't been easy getting here, the heat was pounding me and I was in struggle town. Serena served like a freight train to my forehand, blindly I furiously swung my raquet to the ball and BANG game set and match...in my players box my new friends from the tennis club cheered me to my VICTORY!!!!
