XCR09 once again left the best until last, with the final race of the season, the “Tan Relays”, held on a fine Spring morning around the Botanical Gardens next to the Yarra River. Melbourne University fronted record numbers for the sunny event, aided by the addition of a large handful of fast-twitch members of MUAC. The women fielded four full teams, and the men three and a bit – the best MUAC turn out to a XCR relay this season.

The highlight of the day was the Division 1 women racing strongly to claim bronze, and a much-awaited spot on the podium. Andy Selby-Smith, MUAC member, and White Train stalwart has been selected to represent Victoria at the 2009 Australian Marathon Championships, to be held in conjunction with the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday, the 11th of October.  Andy is in top marathon form after a great run at the 2009 Christchurch Marathon and looks certain to run under 2:30.

It will be the first time the Australian Marathon Championships have been held in Melbourne since 1981.

Congratulations and good luck Andy!

In a tautological way the completion of the Half Marathon in the Athletics Victoria XCR ’09 season almost marks the completion of the season. With just one round to go the MUAC teams are in strong positions as the season draws to a close and the final positions on the premiership ladders are determined and, more importantly, who is relegated and who is promoted between the divisions of racing is decided.
